Some of the key roles are: offering organizational insight and continually communicating information to guide employees; coaching and mentoring employees so they grow and develop; providing ongoing constructive feedback that creates awareness and results in performance improvement; setting annual performance and developmental goals that strengthen the individual employee's contribution, as well as increasing overall performance for the organization; and continually seeking opportunities for new and creative learning approaches that utilizes current technology.

One of the goals of the development of this resource section is to provide support and to empower supervisors, as you are the gateway to employee engagement.

We hope this site provides a “one-stop shopping” option to support your role as a supervisor.

City of Hamilton Supervisors and Employee Engagement

 One of every Department's objectives should be to improve employee engagement.  We hope to improve the degree to which employees are connected and committed to their work, their colleagues and the goals of their Department as well as the entire organization. Engagement is encouraged and demonstrated in the way the supervisors and employees work to support each other's success.

 Supervisor Handbook.

HOW TO USE THE SUPERVISOR HANDBOOK
This Handbook is to be used as an aid and guide. It can be supplemented by the advice and guidance available from the Department of Human Resources should you have any questions about any of the information it provides.

Each section covers an area of inquiry with a brief introduction, then answers the questions most frequently asked of Human Resources by supervisors and managers. The forms and templates are available under the Forms Tab.

Our purpose is to make the handbook as complete as possible, so please call the Department of Human Resources if there is an issue you would like addressed in this handbook, and we may incorporate it in a future update.

The purpose of the handbook is:

  • To provide a basis for training all supervisors and managers in the basics of employee and labor relations;

  • To provide uniform employee and labor relations references, examples, and procedures and;

  • To provide an easy-to-use reference to serve as a first point of information whenever a supervisor or manager is faced with an employee relations or labor relations issue.

The handbook was designed to provide the user with a maximum amount of information in an easy to use format. Each major topic (e.g., "probationary employees," "leaves of absence," etc.) is discussed first in an introductory paragraph, followed by answers to the most commonly asked questions regarding that topic.

This handbook is a source of information, but it should not solely be relied upon. Each employee and labor relations issue you face will have unique circumstances. You are encouraged to discuss such issues with the Department of Human Resources.
